NBA Rumors: Mike Conley re-signing with Memphis Grizzlies?

The Memphis Grizzlies have officially introduced David Fizdale as their new head coach on Tuesday. According to the latest NBA rumors, Fizdale’s main priority is re-signing star point guard Mike Conley to a new contract this offseason.

“I’m here to win. That’s the best way I can put it. I didn’t leave Miami and that beautiful beach and all that water and good stuff to come here to lose,” Fizdale told the Memphis Commercial Appeal.

The former Miami Heat assistant coach is joining a Grizzlies team with an aging roster composed of Marc Gasol and Zach Randolph. Their star playmaker Conley is set to become an unrestricted free agent but Fizdale has already talked to him about staying in Memphis.

“I’ve spoken to Mike Conley. We had a fantastic conversation, a very energized, open conversation and an honest conversation. He’s going to get sick of me, because I’m going to follow him. I’m going to just follow him everywhere he goes,” Fizdale said.

The 41-year-old incoming head coach insisted that he has plans for Conley, who will likely ask for a max contract. Fizdale wants him to be like the guy for Grizzlies just like Dwyane Wade is for the Heat. It should be a good feeling to get compared to Wade in terms of being how important a player is to a team.

Conley’s season was cut short by an injury to his foot and he was only a spectator when the San Antonio Spurs swept the Grizzlies in the first round of the playoffs. In nine seasons in Memphis, he has a career average of 13.6 points, 2.9 rebounds, 6.1 assists and 1.2 steals.

The 29-year-old is considered one of the most underrated players in the NBA. He has been linked with many teams this offseason such as the Spurs, New York Knicks, Houston Rockets and Sacramento Kings.
