NBA Rumors: Nick Young’s stay in LA signals nearing D’Angelo Russell-DeMarcus Cousins trade?

The Los Angeles Lakers have not made any plan to remove Nick Young out of their roster. According to the latest NBA rumors, the Lakers decision to let ‘Swaggy P’ stay signals a nearing trade between D’Angelo Russell and DeMarcus Cousins.

The rift between D’Angelo Russell and Nick Young created the rumors that the Lakers will be waived or trading ‘Swaggy P’ before the start of the 2016-17 NBA season. However, the Lakers let the August 31 deadline to stretch a player’s salary for 2016-17 pass with Young still on the roster.

Despite the reports that the two players are trying to fix their relationship, some people do not believe that the two guards can still be effective teammates on the court. Considering Nick Young’s performance last season, the Lakers will surely prefer to keep D’Angelo Russell.

However, between the two, Russell has undoubtedly the higher market price. In the past months, there were reports saying that the Sacramento Kings were inquiring about the availability of D’Angelo Russell.

Unfortunately, DeMarcus Cousins is the only Kings’ trade piece that could attract the Lakers’ attention to make the deal. Recently, according to CBS Sports, a league executive predicted that Cousins will leave the Kings in 2018.

The Sacramento Kings are poised to suffer another disappointing season. In the 2016 NBA draft, they selected two big men who have the same position as DeMarcus Cousins. If they continue to struggle in the succeeding years, there is a higher possibility that Boogie will leave.

DeMarcus Cousins are one of the NBA superstars who is frequently mentioned in different trade rumors. According to Eric Pincus of Basketball Insider, Yi Jianlian’s signing could be part of the Lakers plan to sign DeMarcus Cousins next season.

“Theoretically, the Lakers would be able to reach that number by sending out Julius Randle, Anthony Brown and Yi ($12,141,756 combined).  Sacramento would need two open roster spots to make such a deal legal in-season.” Pincus wrote.

So far, the Lakers are one of the NBA teams who have plenty of young assets. If the Lakers chose Nick Young to stay, they might consider using D’Angelo Russell as a trade piece to make the trade for DeMarcus Cousins possible.

DeMarcus Cousins recently admitted that the Los Angeles Lakers is his favorite team. The Lakers may or may not be his next destination, but if the Kings suffer another disappointment, expect Boogie to find his way out of Sacramento.
