NBA Rumors: Sacramento Kings shows strong pursuit for Kevin Mchale as head coach

Rumors and speculations were swirling about the Sacramento Kings’ emerging interest in hiring former Houston Rockets coach Kevin McHale to fill up the vacant position left by George Karl after being fired.

According to ESPN, King general manager Vlade Divac had shown potential interest with McHale over the other candidates for the head coach position including former Minnesota Timberwolves interim coach Sam Mitchell, former Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Clippers coach Vinny Del Negro, former Atlanta Hawks and New York Knicks coach and ESPN analyst Mark Jackson.

Other candidates for the Kings’ coaching position were not interviewed yet, but Kevin McHale was considered the man who had higher chances of landing the job.

The Sacramento Kings also considered in hiring Golden State Warriors assistant coach Luke Walton but seemed like in greater competition after other teams like the Los Angeles Lakers and the New York Knicks also showed interest in getting Walton’s service.

Kevin McHale was fired by his former team Houston Rockets weeks after the start of the 2015-16 NBA season. The team did not start well and the Kings management felt that they need to make certain adjustments to stop the team’s struggle.

J.B. Bickerstaff led the Kings as an interim coach for the rest of the season, leading the Rockets to the playoffs battling with the reigning champion Golden State Warriors.

The decision of firing McHale as the Rockets’ head coach became controversial since he made a great achievement for the Rockets after bringing them in the 2015 Western Conference Finals.

If McHale will be the official head coach of the Kings, it would be an interesting sight to see him handling such player as DeMarcus Cousins who was considered as one of the most dominant centers in the league.

However, Cousins had been reportedly having issues with his former coach and that might bring a problem to Mchale. Also, Rajon Rondo’s decision to re-sign with the Sacramento Kings was still questionable since he will become a free agent in the upcoming off-season.

Kevin McHale could be an interesting fit for the Kings and he might be the answer in ending the Sacramento Kings playoff drought.
