NBA Trade Rumors: Rudy Gay wants out from Kings; Should East contenders Pacers, Celtics, Cavs be interested?

Rudy Gay is available for trade from the Sacramento Kings. NBA trade rumors Friday claim that the veteran forward has demanded to be dealt from the Western Conference team not expected to fight for a playoff spot next season.

Ailene Voisin of the Sacramento Bee updated the Kings’ plan to trade Gay on social media.

Among the teams aggressively pursuing Gay are the Indiana Pacers, according to previous NBA trade rumors. Initial reports had the Pacers linked to the Kings with a trade involving Gay and veteran shooting guard Monta Ellis. However, there are also reports that the Kings are not interested in the swap.

There are other teams that may be interested in Gay after a 2016 free agency when they failed to net a superstar like Kevin Durant. These teams include teams like the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers, both of which has salary cap space to take on some huge contracts.

Gay is on a friendly deal that will pay him $13.3 million and $14.2 million in the next two seasons.

Gay is one of the better scorers in the league and had averages of 17.2 points, 6.5 rebounds and 1.4 steals per game last season for the Kings. The 29-year-old forward does not fit the Kings’ long-term plans as Sacramento wants to go younger and rebuild around star DeMarcus Cousins.

Gay could be a better fit with teams assured of a playoff spot or contending for an NBA title. Teams like the Celtics and Pacers can give him a starting spot and the Cleveland Cavaliers could use him as a weapon off the bench, especially if they can’t retain J.R. Smith in free agency.
