The Phoenix Suns have decided to bench Brandon Knight for the coming season making him an expendable asset. Trade rumors suggest the Suns send Knight in exchange for Philadelphia 76ers’ Nerlens Noel.
The Suns decided to put Knight as a backup to Eric Bledsoe, who came out with big numbers last season with 20.4 points, 6.1 assists and 4.0 rebounds per game. Bledsoe’s performance made it clear that the Suns want a new direction. Last season, Knight has averaged 19.6 points, 5.1 assists and 3.9 rebounds per game.
Knight is the second highest paid player on the Suns’ roster next to Bledsoe. Putting him as a reserve makes it ideal for the team to listen to trade offers. Knight plays backup chores due to a sports hernia and is trying to get healthy for the coming season.
In the proposed deal, Knight would get to play with T.J. McConnell and Sergio Rodriguez in the point guard position. This would mean that the 76ers would be able to space out the floor with reliable court generals at hand.
The 76ers would have a solid point guard on Knight, though he may have defensive lapses but he can find help from Joel Embiid down the paint.
For the 76ers, it is no secret that they have always wanted to dispose Noel or Jahlil Okafor from once Embiid returns healthy. However, Noel’s desire to play for other teams make him an easy pick for the team to put on the trading block.
Going to the Suns, Noel would give Marquese Chriss and Dragan Bender a competition in the power forward position. Noel’s advantage is his three-years of experience and his defensive intelligence. His addition would be a big help as well with veteran Tyson Chandler down the paint.
The deal may sound possible as ESPN’s Chad Ford reported that the Suns are thinking of trading either Knight or Bledsoe. Noel for his side has always been in trade rumors and this deal could do it. In the end, the teams will have to think if it would be worth giving their respective rosters a chance till the midseason trade deadline.
