It seems that NBA free agent J. R. Smith is blowing off some steam following his contract talks with the Cleveland Cavaliers as he was spotted over the weekend at the OVO fest held at the Air Canada Center.
TMZ reported that Smith was with former Cavaliers teammate Dahntay Jones and French Montana in the event that also saw rapper Drake taking center stage. It seems Smith is chilling out despite the stalemate in his contract talks with the Cavaliers.
Smith is reportedly asking for a $15 million paycheck per season that the Cavaliers are said to be contemplating as they may go over the salary cap for the coming season as they are still arranging the contract for LeBron James. Smith is optimistic, though, that he would get his desired contract since he and James have the same agent doing the negotiations for them.
James, on the other hand, has yet to agree on a contract extension with the Cavaliers which puts Smith in the cellar of the negotiating table. As Smith waits for the Cavaliers’ offer, he is out there partying with friends. There were reports that Smith is also talking with the Boston Celtics, which might be able to give him his request for a hefty paycheck.
ESPN’s Chris Forsberg noted that the addition of Smith to the Celtics’ roster would not only boost their morale of having a veteran in their midst. But will also answer their shooting woes that coach Bard Steven wanted so dearly to be addressed during the offseason. The trade market has not been too kind to the Celtics, which hopes to snag a veteran to help Al Horford in leading their younger line-up.
If the Celtics miss this opportunity to sign Smith then it will be one hell of a ride this season for them as they look to Isaiah Thomas, Al Horford and the rest of the crew to get their acts together to breeze through the coming season.
Contract negotiations do add some stress to a person but for Smith, there is nothing to worry as he lets his agent do the business talks while he parties and hopes he has a work by the time the NBA opens training camp.
