The Los Angeles Lakers and New York Knicks are two of the teams that need to sign a major player in the upcoming 2016 free agency to improve their chances next seasons.

However, one big name free agent, Hassan Whiteside, who currently plays for the Miami Heat, stated that he did not want to sign with a team that is struggling and “be the face of a losing franchise” and that could include the Lakers and Knicks.

“That’d be nice. I feel like a lot of people want to be that. But I want to win more than anything. I don’t really want to be the face of a losing franchise. You want to be a face of a winning program. And it’s always easier to get people to come to Miami,” Whiteside answered when asked about the possibility of a maximum contract this 2016 offseason, via the Sun Sentinel.

Whiteside also knows that the Heat are still in contention for a playoff spot this season and they have a shot at beating the likes of top seeds Toronto Raptors or Cleveland Cavaliers in the postseason.

“I just try to focus on the season. I can’t control anything that’s going to happen in free agency. I just try to be the best teammate and the best guy I can be and I think everything else is going to take its place.”

Whiteside was a second round pick, or 33rd overall, in the 2010 NBA Draft but with his shot-blocking, rebounding and athleticism he has developed into one of the best big men in the NBA. In 53 games this season, Whiteside averages 13.2 points, 11.7 rebounds and 3.9 blocked shots, leader in the league.
