Despite having some improvements this offseason, the Los Angeles Lakers are still predicted to be the worst team in the Western Conference in the 2016-17 NBA season. According to the latest NBA rumors, the Lakers will trade Jordan Clarkson to either Atlanta Hawks or Philadelphia 76ers if his defense does not improve next season.
After the disappointing 2015-16 NBA season, the Los Angeles Lakers decided to undergo a rebuilding process. They made their first move by firing Byron Scott and replacing him with Golden State Warriors assistant and former Lakers Luke Walton.
In the recent free agency, the Lakers immediately re-signed their own free agent Jordan Clarkson and added Luol Deng and Timofey Mozgov on their roster. The Filipino-American guard is considered one of the most important players in the Lakers’ young roster.
Jordan Clarkson has been a revelation in his rookie year after giving him the opportunity to showcase his talent. From being the 46th overall pick, the 24-year-old guard was labeled as the ‘steal’ in the 2014 NBA draft after an impressive performance in his rookie season.
This summer, Jordan Clarkson is currently working on his three-point shooting. Clarkson has improved his percentage in the three-point range in the past two seasons. Averaging 31. 4 percent in his rookie season, he increase his accuracy to 34.7 last season.
Another thing that Jordan Clarkson needs to improve is his defense.
“When JC was off the floor, the Lakers allowed opponents an offensive rating of 107.9, which is awful in its own right. But, when Clarkson was in the game, that number ballooned to 113.8.” Jeremy Bucker of Laker Show Life wrote.
Once he succeeds in improving his defense, he will definitely be one of the players to watch next season. However, if fails to address his weak spot, the Lakers might consider moving him to other teams.
There are rumors that the Atlanta Hawks and the Philadelphia 76ers are inquiring regarding the availability of Jordan Clarkson via trade. However, since he just signed with the Lakers in free agency, they still need to wait until December before they can make any move.
This would give the Lakers time to observe if there will be a great improvement in Clarkson’s performance on both ends.
