Los Angeles Lakers guard Jose Calderon is currently playing for Team Spain in the 2016 Rio Olympics men’s basketball tournament. Despite having limited minutes on the court, the NBA veteran stays positive and focuses on the team’s future in the Olympics.
In their game against Croatia, Jose Calderon received a DNP-CD (did not play – coach decision). Also, he only played limited minutes in their loss to the host nation, Brazil. There are speculations that Calderon might be suffering injury or feeling something ‘uncomfortable’ in his body.
However, Jose Calderon denied the rumors and remained a team player despite having limited playing time. Spain has younger and improved guards on their roster. Ricky Rubio, Sergio Rodriguez and Sergio Llull served as the new backcourt of Team Spain.
Unfortunately, Spain’s struggle continues with Jose Calderon patiently waiting for his playing time. In an interview with John Schuhmann of NBA.com, the 34-year-old guard said that he is still hopeful that his team will manage to bounce back in the succeeding games.
“It’s always tough when your team loses. It’s about us. We got three more games and we can make it happen or not. Hopefully, it can get better.” Calderon said.
Before the start of the Rio Olympics, Spain has been the favorite team to rival the Team USA. However, it seems like the Spain is still struggling to get their first victory. Marc Gasol is indeed a big loss for their team. Also, their star players like Pau Gasol and Jose Calderon are already aging.
Jose Calderon is now part of the Los Angeles Lakers after being traded by the Chicago Bulls. The 34-year-old guard was a former member of the New York Knicks being sent to Bulls in a blockbuster deal. Calderon is expected to come off the bench as a backup for D’Angelo Russell.
Jose Calderon and Marcelo Huertas are expected to battle for backup minutes next season. The two international players will serve as mentors to the young Lakers.
