The Los Angeles Lakers 2016-17 training camp roster is now down to 17 after waiving forward Zach Auguste, guard Julian Jacobs, and forward Travis Wear. Forwards Thomas Robinson, Yi Jianlian, and Metta World Peace are expected to battle for the final roster spot.
The Lakers entered the preseason with a 20-training camp roster. The past games helped them choose the players who are deserving to be included in the final roster spot. Nick Young, who was rumored to be traded or waived before the training camp, has established an impressive performance, giving him a higher chance to play for the purple and gold in the regular season.
With 17 players still under contract, the Lakers need to make at least two more cuts before the real game begins. According to Mike Bresnahan of Los Angeles Times, Yi Jianlian, Thomas Robinson, and Metta World Peace are still questionable to earn a roster spot.
World Peace could provide veteran leadership for the Lakers, but it is questionable if he is still fitted in a young roster team, who currently has a logjam in their frontcourt. Yi Jianlian was considered an NBA draft bust, but his performance in the recent Olympic games proved that he is ready to play in the NBA.
Jianlian is definitely a good fit in the modern NBA since he has the ability to knock down shots in the three-point range. Head coach Luke Walton said that the Chinese center/power forward is probably the best shooter from beyond the arc of all their big men.
Meanwhile, Thomas Robinson, the fifth overall pick in 2012, has been an intriguing prospect for the Lakers. According to Mark Medina of Insider Social, Lakers head coach Luke Walton praised Robinson for his contribution to the team.
“He never takes plays off,” Lakers coach Luke Walton said. “He’s a great guy. You want him around. He’s a monster on the offensive glass and has a great attitude with everything we’ve done.”
However, Luke Walton did not say if Robinson could make it to the final roster. As of now, Walton is still undecided on who among Metta World Peace, Thomas Robinson, and Yi Jianlian will be cut or make it to the final 15. The succeeding preseason games will determine who is the most deserving to earn a spot.
