Michael Carter-Williams is slowly getting back to his form after recovering from a hip injury last season. However, rumors are swirling that the Milwaukee Bucks are offering to trade Carter-Williams in exchange for Philadelphia 76ers’ Jerami Grant and T.J. McConell.
The Bucks are clearly hurting with Khris Middleton out with a hamstring injury and with no definite recovery timetable. The Bucks expect that another injury to Carter-Williams will derail their campaign this season.
With the reported trade, the Bucks would get McConell and Grant. The Bucks would want to explore the market in getting young and talented players. Both McConell and Grant are not game changers but could give the Bucks a depth in terms of players coming off the bench.
McConell is a decent backup point guard averaging 6.1 points with 4.5 assists and 3.1 rebounds a game. He could very well be Matthew Dellavedova’s wingman. Grant, however, could suit himself in the small forward or power forward position for the Bucks. He could be in rotation with Malcolm Brogdon and Rashad Vaughn.
In return, it would be nice to see Carter-Williams back with the 76ers, though his role might change but still will be a big contributor to the team.
Obviously, the Bucks want to fill in the void in Middleton’s absence and might as well explore trade options that are plausible. Bucks coach Jason Kidd has defended Carter-Williams trade rumors, saying that 24-year old point guard has worked hard to bounce back from injuries. He told SiriusXM’s NBA Radio that he is happy with how Carter-Williams has improved coming off an injury and how he has helped the team during training camp.
“Rumors are just part of this business. We’re happy with Michael (Carter-Williams). He’s had a great summer and has worked extremely hard and it showed in the first game in Chicago. Coming off the bench, I think he led us in rebounds. He is one of the best wing defenders in this league. There’s always speculation around different guys, but I think Michael is going to help us win,” Kidd said.
The Bucks would want to strengthen their second unit and getting McConell and Grant might do the trick. It may seem unbelievable at least they would not worry since Carter-Williams is now prone to injuries and another injury would get them off track. It is a trade worth exploring but both the Bucks and 76ers still need to assess if it would give them what they are looking for in terms of assets.
