The Dallas Mavericks are making preparations as to their game plan when the NBA free agency begins this summer and rumors are swirling that they are also looking at the possibility of going after Hassan Whiteside, Pau Gasol and Al Horford if plans of landing Dwight Howard fails.
The Mavericks are dead serious in pursuing Howard as they would want someone to back up Dirk Nowitzki inside the paint. Howard could be a game changer for the Mavericks as he could draw double teams down the baseline that could easily open things for Dirk and the rest of the Mavericks.
Howard is opting out of his $23 million contracts with the Houston Rockets and his name has been linked with teams such as the Orlando Magic, Los Angeles Lakers, Atlanta Hawks, Milwaukee Bucks, Oklahoma City Thunder and Portland Trailblazers, aside from the Mavericks.
Now if Howard would raise his asking paycheck to allow him to play for whichever team, the Mavericks are looking also at other possibilities and would like to explore other free agents in the market. Heat’s Hassan Whiteside, Bulls’ Pau Gasol and Hawks’ Al Horford has also drawn interest from the Mavericks front office.
The Mavericks are looking at a solid enforcer inside the paint, who could also play well with Nowitzki as he plays the twilight of his career with the Mavericks. The player the Mavericks are looking could also possibly take over the throne that Nowitzki will leave once he retires. However, a question is posted upon Howard, does he still has what it takes to lead a team to a championship?
Whiteside could be seen as a future for whichever team would be able to sign him by the summer, but the 26-year old center must be able to work on his patience as that would be one loophole that other teams would try to explore each time they play. Gasol, however, has been defying odds as the 35-year old Spanish baller has been averaging a double-double for the Bulls this season.
Horford for his part has shown his talent with the Hawks and has averaged 15 points and nine rebounds, which could also be a great contribution for the Mavericks once they open talks with him this summer.
With such talent in the free agency market, the Mavericks will not a hard time looking for the pieces that would work out for them for the next season. For sure Mark Cuban will also be looking at the talented rookies come draft day.
