Already the Philadelphia 76ers are off to a bad start as prized rookie Ben Simmons suffered a foot injury in the training camp. Rumors are swirling that with the uncertainty of recovery Simmons NBA career is in jeopardy.
According to CBS Sports, Simmons suffered a fracture in his right foot. With the injury, Simmons will not be able to play for the team’s preseason match against the Celtics Tuesday. This brings uncertainty to the team as Jahlil Okafor and Joel Embiid also had restricted movement.
Simmons suffered the injury during the team’s final scrimmage held at Stockton University on Friday. The 76ers expect Simmons to debut together with Okafor and Embiid, but it seems the 76ers will have to sort this one out fast.
The team’s medical group reviewed the x-ray and MRI done on Simmons at New York’s Mount Sinai Medical Center. Results revealed that Simmons suffered a fracture of the fifth metatarsal bone in his right foot. The 76ers issued a statement considering further medical evaluation and treatment.
The 76ers are being cautious on players on their roster who are coming out of injury. Okafor is coming off a knee injury while Embiid is also coming off a foot injury he suffered that let him miss two seasons as a rookie.
With the latest injury on Simmons, the 76ers could not seem to launch their season with a healthy lineup. High expectations are mounting the team’s young core that they at their best in the coming season.

76ers coach Brett Brown noted that Simmons will sit it out on Tuesday’s game while Okafor and Embiid will suit up. They join Dario Saric, Nerlens Noel, and Timothe Luwawu. Jerryd Bayless is uncertain to also play in Tuesday’s preseason match as his sore wrist is still closely monitored.
Injuries continue to plague the 76ers and there is no telling how it will affect their campaign in the coming season. If the injury trend continues, the 76ers are looking at a duplicate of their performance last season.
