Presumptive No. 1 draft pick Ben Simmons has opted not to workout with the Los Angeles Lakers and Philadelphia 76ers and rumors are swirling that he might end up with the Boston Celtics right in the 2016 NBA Draft.
The Celtics hold the No. 3 pick and the chances for them to take in Simmons remains to be seen if and only if the 76ers and the Lakers choose otherwise. But most analysts would state that it is likely that the 76ers will take Simmons in as this year’s top draft pick.
According to Chad Ford of ESPN, Simmons has not committed to any team for a workout ever since his name and that of Brandon Ingram floated as the top prospects for this year’s draft that will take place on June 23 in Brooklyn. Even for the fact that 76ers hold the overall pick for this year, Simmons decided not to workout with them as well.
But the good news is that Simmons is working on his shooting as the 19-year old top rookie prospect is using the summer to improve his shooting especially his jump shot, which is one of his weaknesses.
“The 19-year old’s shot doesn’t look totally broken, but so far it has been his one glaring weakness. Simmons has to know this, and it looks like he’s spending the offseason addressing the major blotch on his otherwise sterling resume,” writes Harrison Faigen.
Aside from improving his perimeter shooting, Simmons is also improving his dribbling abilities considering he stands six-foot-10.With no workout schedules with Simmons, both the 76ers and Lakers will just have to rely on the numbers and videos that show his workout in improving his skills to become a well-rounded player fit for the professional league.
The Celtics, for their part, might not be able to take in Simmons but will have the chance to pick third in the draft and most likely they will be able to take in a player who could fit well with their system.
Many have stated that this year’s class of draftees are lacking in star qualities but with the right research and workout schedules, teams still have ample of time to discuss among their executives as to who will be the right pick for them. Simmons and the rest of the candidates will just have to prove their worth in the coming NBA season.
