Doc Rivers, head coach and President of Basketball Operations for the Los Angeles Clippers, strengthens his stance to keep their ‘Big Three’ of Chris Paul, Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan to stop the rumors that the franchise will be breaking their core this summer.
In the past months, Blake Griffin has been involved in various trade rumors. The Boston Celtics, Oklahoma City Thunder and Chicago Bulls were reportedly interested in acquiring the 27-year-old power forward from the Los Angeles Clippers.
Blake Griffin will have the chance to become a free agent next year. If the Clippers see no guarantee that he will re-sign, their best option this summer is to trade him than letting him go without getting anything in return. However, Doc Rivers is not buying the idea of trading Griffin to another team.
In an appearance on The Vertical Podcast, Doc Rivers told Adrian Wojnarowski that the Clippers have no interest in trading Blake Griffin. Rivers blamed all the rumors from the Boston sports radio talk show but did not divulge any further details.
Since DeAndre Jordan, Chris Paul and Blake Griffin joined force to become the Clippers’ ‘Big Three’, they still failed to bring home a championship title. However, no one can deny the fact that Griffin resurrected the Clippers from the laughing stock of the NBA.
Blake Griffin was also the reason why Chris Paul considered the Clippers as a trade destination. In last year’s free agency, the Clippers almost lost DeAndre Jordan but thanks to Paul and Griffin for doing their part. Despite the struggles in the past seasons, the Clippers are still considered as a serious playoff contender.
According to Clipperholics, Doc River’s future depends on keeping Blake Griffin. The Clippers head coach said in The Vertical Podcast that he is confident that Chris Paul and Blake Griffin will re-sign with the Clippers next summer.
“Well, I’m confident. Probably the same way every team is confident that they’re gonna be able to keep their guys. I do think we have an attractive place. We have a new owner. It would be interesting if Steve Ballmer wasn’t the owner; I don’t know how confident I would be. But with Steve, I’m extremely confident that we can keep both.” Rivers said.
If they lose either Paul or Griffin in free agency, the Los Angeles Clippers will surely be in big trouble. Rivers already said that winning will be the key to keeping his players. However, if the Clippers suffer another disappointment next season, they might end up losing their superstars to other teams.
