NBA Rumors: Blazers to be active on draft night, free agency this summer

The Portland Trail Blazers had a very surprising, but promising season after losing four starters in the offseason. According to the latest NBA rumors, the Blazers are not going to let it happen again as they plan to be active this summer during draft night and free agency.

Portland general manager Neil Olshey told CSN Northwest that the team will be looking to improve its roster via draft even though they don’t have a draft pick. He also noted that the Blazers have money to sign a big-name free agent despite the fact that Portland is not a big market city.

“We’ll be aggressive on draft night. We’ll target certain players but we won’t get swept up in ‘draft fever’ just to grab a guy to grab him,” Olshey said.

“That said, if we have an opportunity to accelerate this and go get a veteran, proven player, we have the resources,” he added.

The Blazers were ousted in the second-round of the 2016 NBA playoffs by the Golden State Warriors in five grueling games. They have a good core of young players headed by All-Star guard Damian Lillard and 2016 Most Improved Player of the Year C.J. McCollum.

However, Portland has six free agents of their own: Allen Crabbe, Maurice Harkless, Gerald Henderson, Chris Kaman, Meyers Leonard and Brian Roberts. Nonetheless, only Kaman and Roberts are expected to be not with the team next season.

According to SB Nation, the Blazers need a guard who can create scoring opportunities when Lillard and McCollum sit down for a rest. Some of their options include Jeremy Lin and Jamal Crawford who are considered two of the best sixth men in the NBA.

The team also needs to add a scoring presence in the paint and they could go after Al Horford, Dwight Howard, Pau Gasol and Al Jefferson.
