Weeks before the preseason begins, there are still NBA rumors of blockbuster trades and one includes the defending champions Cleveland Cavaliers and Minnesota Timberwolves point guard Ricky Rubio.
One NBA analyst believes that Rubio would be “perfect” for LeBron James’ squad and his pass-first ability from the point guard spot would be a good addition to the team.
“Ricky Rubio would be the perfect complement to Irving and fit for the Cavaliers,” Jamyson Frierson of Hoops Habit said in a recent article.
“With Zach LaVine and Kris Dunn as the future at point guard for the Minnesota Timberwolves, Rubio is likely an available asset. He’s mentioned in the past how he’s wanted out of Minnesota and to play in a bigger market.”
These NBA rumors, with Rubio moving out of Minnesota, have been discussed for most of the offseason after the Timberwolves got Kris Dunn in the 2016 NBA Draft. Dunn is projected to be one of the NBA Rookie of the Year candidates next season and has a higher ceiling than Rubio, who has not improved his play over the years.
Frierson added that Rubio told a Spanish radio station that he might be leaving Minnesota if the Timberwolves fail to make the postseason next year.
Is a Cavaliers-Timberwolves trade involving Rubio possible? It can happen but unlikely at this point because the Cavs do not have much to offer to Minnesota. However, the Timberwolves can see this deal as just a salary dump and a chance to get future first round picks from the Cavaliers.
Via ESPN’s Trade Checker, a Ricky Rubio for Iman Shumpert and Mo Williams works. This is not ideal for the Timberwolves but the Cavaliers can add future picks like a pair of first rounders in 2017 and 2019.
Will the Timberwolves unload Ricky Rubio via a salary dump as claimed by these NBA rumors? It’s unlikely but it could happen if Kris Dunn performs well early in the season that it gives them a good reason to cut ties with the Spanish point guard.
