The Boston Celtics had an underwhelming draft night as they did not make any big trades that would have made them an Eastern Conference powerhouse. However, the latest NBA rumors suggest that the Celtics acquiring Blake Griffin from the Los Angeles Clippers is still possible.
Boston was linked with Jimmy Butler from the Chicago Bulls and Nerlens Noel from the Philadelphia 76ers on draft night but no trade was made. They ended up drafting Jaylen Brown with the third overall selection and trading a couple of their second-round picks.
Jonathan Tjarks of The Ringer suggested that the Clippers may end up trading Blake Griffin as they have a shot to sign Kevin Durant in free agency. Even if KD decides not to sign with them, which is almost a sure thing, the Clippers will receive offers from teams needing a superstar.
Tjarks mentioned that the Celtics is one of those teams, as they want someone to pair up with Isaiah Thomas. His proposed trade would see Boston send Avery Bradley, Jae Crowder and Kelly Olynyk to Los Angeles for Griffin.
It seems like a fair trade with Marcus Smart being the alternative player, replacing Bradley. The Clippers will instantly become a great defensive team with Bradley/Smart and Crowder in the wings and DeAndre Jordan in the middle.
On the other hand, the Celtics will have two All-Stars on their roster and they could possibly add another via free agency. They are a dark horse in the Kevin Durant sweepstakes. Nonetheless, these are all just speculations at the moment.
The Clippers have tried shopping Griffin at the deadline following an incident with a team personnel. While Doc Rivers insisted that he will not break up the team’s Big 3, they are expected to receive offers this offseason.
