NBA Rumors: Celtics, Bulls to join Thunder in the Blake Griffin sweepstakes next summer

Los Angeles Clippers star power forward Blake Griffin is set to become an unrestricted free agent next summer and the Oklahoma City Thunder have made him a priority signing. However, the latest NBA rumors suggest that teams such as the Boston Celtics and Chicago Bulls are interested in signing Griffin in 2017.

The Clippers were eliminated in the first round by the Portland Trail Blazers in last season’s playoffs. It was the fifth year wherein the duo of Chris Paul and Blake Griffin failed to make it past the Western Conference semifinals.

NBA rumors in Los Angeles is indicating that the 2016-17 season is the duo’s last chance to make it work as they both are expected to become free agents next summer. According to Steve Kyler of Basketball Insiders, the Celtics, Bulls and Magic will join the Thunder in the Blake Griffin sweepstakes of 2017.

“The Thunder won’t be alone if Griffin hits the open market. The Boston Celtics have long had eyes for Griffin, and there has been talk that the Orlando Magic and Chicago Bulls would also make a hard push at Griffin,” Kyler reported.

Kyler also noted that teams mentioned above have the assets to make a trade if the Clippers decided to sell Blake Griffin at the deadline. Clips head coach Doc Rivers has insisted in previous interviews that they are not going to break up their core but it’s only a matter of time before they realize that they need do it.

According to FanSided, the Celtics and Thunder give Griffin the best chance to win an NBA championship. However, the five-time All-Star is a native of Oklahoma City which gives the Thunder the advantage in free agency.
