The Boston Celtics have been linked with many players since last February trade deadline but no deal has been made. However, the latest NBA rumors suggest that the Celtics might finally acquire Jahlil Okafor from the Philadelphia 76ers in exchange for one of the Brooklyn Nets’ first-round picks.
According to Steve Bulpett of the Boston Herald, the Celtics and Sixers have discussed possible deals since February but no trade was made. It continued at the NBA Draft and this summer with both Boston and Philly knowing that one bad trade could be catastrophic to each franchise.
“One false move here and the result will be staring you in the face for a basketball generation. Jahlil Okafor may be more of a sure thing than what the Celtics could offer in return (including either of the Nets’ picks they own), but this is very much a projection of how the players who could be involved would develop,” Bulpett opined.
Jahlil Okafor is not the only Sixers player being linked with the Celtics but also Nerlens Noel. There were earlier reports saying that Marcus Smart is going to Philadelphia in exchange for Noel. However, the Celtics are reluctant to part ways with Smart since he will have a bigger role with Evan Turner gone.
But back to Okafor, it is not too much to give up a possible first overall pick for him but the next two draft class are very loaded with talent that can turn a franchise around. Given that the Celtics are already a playoff contender, they would rather give up their best assets for a superstar.
Okafor is not really a sure thing despite his potential. His offense is already on par with the top big men in the league but his defense is nothing but atrocious. He has also not played a single preseason game to start this campaign due to a knee injury, per The Inquirer Daily News.
Finally, the emergence of Joel Embiid could be a big factor in moving Jahlil Okafor but the Sixers has to monitor his minutes and make sure that he is fully healthy. If Embiid proves he is healthy this season, Okafor might get traded next summer rather than this season.
Nevertheless, it should be noted that these are just NBA rumors and nothing has been confirmed. But expect the Celtics to be active until the February trade deadline as they look to add a third superstar to help Boston win their 18th NBA championship.
