The Boston Celtics have lots of assets in recent years but has failed to net a superstar via trade or free agency. However, the NBA rumors of the Cs getting a star could happen in the next few weeks with reports that Danny Ainge is closing in on a deal for a star player.
Dan Lifshatz, a producer for the radio station 98.5 The Sports Hub, which is based in Boston, stated on social media Twitter that the Celtics are nearing a trade for a superstar.
Lifshatz also said that the target players are not Rudy Gay of the Sacramento Kings and Jahlil Okafor of the Philadelphia 76ers. Both Gay and Okafor are mentioned in many NBA rumors at this point of the 2016 offseason and are reportedly on the trading block.
Both Gay and Okafor are also not “star players” so the Celtics may be targeting other high-profile players available in the market.
Even before the offseason, NBA rumors have linked the Celtics to DeMarcus Cousins of the Sacramento Kings. It’s not clear if the Kings are willing to trade Cousins and rebuild their roster from scratch.
With Kevin Durant leaving the Oklahoma City Thunder this summer, another star player reportedly available is Russell Westbrook. The star point guard will be a free agent after next season and the Thunder are worried that Westbrook may leave again in free agency, just like Durant.
Both Cousins and Westbrook fit the bill of the “star players” target in the latest NBA rumors. The Celtics have the pieces to offer the Kings or the Thunder and if either one is willing to let go of their superstars, a big trade may be coming in the next few weeks.
