The Boston Celtics are struggling with injuries at the start of the 2016-2017 NBA Season and this is affecting their performance so far this year. According to NBA rumors, the C’s are still aggressively looking for a “major” deal to tweak their roster this season. Could DeMarcus Cousins be the main target for Boston?
Steve Bulpett of the Boston Herald is stirring trade speculations of an eventual Celtics’ blockbuster deal before the deadline in February.
“From all indications speaking to team sources around the league, Danny Ainge is still after the major trades the C’s president of basketball operations knows are needed,” Bulpett wrote.
“And no doubt he’s loving each story calling the 2017 draft one of the deepest and most talent-laden in many years, understanding that such talk could raise the value of the Nets’ pick that can be theirs.”
Nets’ pick key to Celtics’ success
The Brooklyn Nets owes the Celtics a swap of their first round picks in the 2017 NBA Draft. That rookie class is not seen as a star-studded one but it is deep according to many mock drafts.
The Nets once again figure to be high in the lottery after the season. The Celtics’ 2017 pick has high value considering the picks’ swap.
There are some superstars that could be available before the NBA trade deadline. One big name player is DeMarcus Cousins from the Sacramento Kings. If the Celtics are looking for a “major” trade, then getting the star big man from the Kings should fit the bill.
Kings-Celtics blockbuster trade involving Cousins?
The Kings are once again struggling this season despite the hiring of head coach Dave Joerger. There is belief in Sacramento that the Cousins and the Kings relationship won’t improve soon. Trading the big man now can net them max value for their franchise player.
DeMarcus Cousins is still under contract in Sacramento until next season but his trade value could go lower if they deal him in his contract year.
The Celtics got Al Horford in free agency last summer. A Horford and Cousins front court could be a good fit since both big guys can stretch the floor. That frontcourt will also be the best in the Eastern Conference if a Boston-Sacramento trade happens.
The NBA rumors of the Celtics trying to get a superstar won’t end until the trade deadline. With Boston not playing up to par this year, they could be forced to make a deal sooner than February and getting DeMarcus Cousins could be their ultimate goal.
