The 2016 NBA Draft is hours away and there are still NBA rumors that the Boston Celtics and Minnesota Timberwolves are targeting Chicago Bulls All-Star Jimmy Butler possibly in a draft day trade on Thursday.
According to Marc Stein and Chad Ford of ESPN, two NBA insiders, the Timberwolves are “prepared” to offer the Bulls the fifth overall pick along with other players on their roster to try to acquire Butler from Chicago.
The same report also claims that the Celtics are targeting Butler and are willing to let go of the No. 3 pick in the 2016 NBA Draft.
The Timberwolves are targeting a reunion between new head coach Tom Thibodeau and his former star at Chicago in Butler although the same report stated that the Bulls are not “active” in finding a trade for their All-Star.
Meanwhile, the Celtics are looking to add veteran stars like Butler either via trade or in free agency. The NBA rumors out of Boston is that they don’t want to add a young prospect this season as they are ready to become title contenders with major moves this 2016 offseason.
The Bulls recently traded away star point guard Derrick Rose and acquired center Robin Lopez along with two other players in a trade with the New York Knicks on Wednesday. The thought in Chicago is that they still want to compete for a playoff spot next season and that it’s unlikely that they trade away Butler.
However, both the Timberwolves and Celtics have young players that could attract the Bulls management if they want multiple players in return.
With the 2016 NBA Draft underway in a few hours, expect the NBA rumors to heat up with the Boston Celtics and Minnesota Timberwolves in a tug-of-war for Jimmy Butler if the Bulls are willing to let him go.
