NBA Rumors: Celtics to trade 3rd overall pick for Jahlil Okafor?

The Boston Celtics were unfortunate not to land the first or second overall pick in the 2016 NBA draft. However, the Celtics still have the third overall selection and the latest rumors suggest that they may trade the pick to the Philadelphia 76ers for Jahlil Okafor.

In an appearance on The Toucher and Rich Show, basketball analyst and Boston native Bill Simmons believes that his beloved Celtics will trade for Okafor. He mentioned that it makes sense for both the teams, especially the Sixers.

“I think the guy they’re (Celtics) going to trade for is Okafor. If you think about it, it makes a ton of sense for Philly. They spend all these high lottery picks on big guys. Meanwhile, the league has gone small and you need perimeter guys to win in the NBA. If you put Ben Simmons with any of those guys, it doesn’t really make any sense,” Simmons said.

The Sixers have drafted three big men in the past three drafts: Nerlens Noel, Joel Embiid and Jahlil Okafor. Philadelphia is leaning towards drafting Ben Simmons, who is a power forward that can handle the ball and defend all five positions.

They also expect 2013 draft pick Dario Saric to finally come in the NBA. If the Sixers trade Okafor, they will have two of the top three selections in the draft and it could be used to pick two cornerstones of the franchise.

On the other hand, the Celtics are preparing for a big offseason wherein they are poised to build upon their successful season. They will have the cap space to go after a big name free agent like Kevin Durant and young players plus draft picks to trade for an established star.
