The Dallas Mavericks are getting serious in being a top contender next season and the fact that rumors are swirling about a possible Dirk Nowitzki and Dwight Howard tandem is getting serious.
What we know so far is that Nowitzki is still weighing things whether he would take the player option of his contract going into next season which will be worth about $8.7 million in order to get a maximum contract. The 18-year veteran stated that he has no plans of playing elsewhere as he has already considered Dallas his second home.
“I enjoy living in Dallas. I’ve been in Dallas as long as I’d been in Germany. This is 18 years now. It’s been an emotional 18 years,” Nowitzki told Earl Sneed.
On the other hand, the thought of having Dwight Howard on the Mavericks roster is interesting as it would have two of the best big men in the league playing side-by-side and would create a tough defensive wall for the Mark Cuban-owned franchise. Even Howard’s teammate in Houston, Jason Terry, as reported by Dwain Price, is excited if that would take place.
“If he comes to Dallas they’ll be talking about Dallas in the likes of winning a championship. Anybody that has his physical stature alongside Dirk is always a huge factor,” Terry said.
Terry believes that Howard is still one of the best centers in the league, though most critics would zero on the skills of Howard, Terry begs to disagree and stated that the 30-year old has more basketball years in him and could lead the Mavericks to a championship run.
“There are three dominant centers that I’ll say, and that’s DeMarcus Cousins (of the Sacramento Kings), DeAndre Jordan (of the Los Angeles Clippers) and Dwight Howard. Not to mention (Memphis’ Marc Gasol, but he’s a different kind of center because of his back to the basket game and the way he can pass. But those other three, they’re athletic, they run the floor, and Dwight fits that perfectly,” Terry explained.
If Terry had his ways he could easily pick up Howard and bring him right in the Mavericks’ doorsteps, but Howard is still discerning on his plans this summer and he has until June 30 to make that decision. And as he is weighing things for his future destination, rumors will always be swirling around to report his possible destination for next season because aside from the Mavericks, Howard is also a high value targeted by other teams.
There is even a possibility that he might re-sign with the Rockets and mend ways with Rockets newly signed head coach Mike D’Antoni, which also a huge rumor is considering their run-in back in Los Angeles. Given the facts, the Mavericks will definitely contemplate of whether to get a superstar this free agency season as Mark Cuban would want to save up this year for a better run at the free agents next year.
