General manager Danny Ainge and the Boston Celtics are reportedly having an unusual vacation in San Diego, California to meet at least two superstars who could possibly join their team next season.
The Boston Celtics have just made one of their biggest free agency signings when they acquired former Atlanta Hawks center Al Horford. However, they failed to acquire Kevin Durant, who chose to join the reigning Western Conference champions, Golden State Warriors. Still, Celtics GM Danny Ainge said they are not yet done in upgrading their roster this summer.
“We’re not done,” Ainge explained in Salt Lake City. “We have the same plans. If you don’t get what you want you have to keep fighting and make the best of it. Everybody wants Kevin Durant on your team and not everyone gets him.”
The Boston Celtics have been linked to different superstars in the league, including Russell Westbrook, Blake Griffin, Jimmy Butler, Kevin Love and DeMarcus Cousins. The Celtics have lots of trade assets to offer in order acquire their preferred players.
Recently, Danny Ainge posted a photo of a dead whale with a hashtag #burymeontheSanDiegobeach.

Celtics guard Isaiah Thomas also shared a photo of his two sons when they are on a vacation in San Diego.
There are speculations that Danny Ainge and the Celtics brass have some ‘business’ in California where most NBA players spend their summer vacation. Kevin O’Connor of SB Nation speculated that the Celtics might be going after either Russell Westbrook or Blake Griffin or both superstars.
Russell Westbrook became the center of trade rumors when Kevin Durant left the Oklahoma City Thunder. The 27-year-old point guard is set to become an unrestricted free agent next year and does not express interest to extend or renegotiate his contract with the Thunder.
Russell Westbrook is indeed one of the best players in the league right now. However, it will be quite risky to trade prized assets for a superstar who will only stay for a year. Danny Ainge can be considered as a veteran in this type of situation.
Based on Westbrook’s Instagram post, he is currently in California to spend his summer vacation. It is not a coincidence that Danny Ainge and the Celtics brass are on the same place. There might be an ongoing negotiation between both parties that could end up to a blockbuster revelation.
Meanwhile, Blake Griffin lives in Los Angeles and meeting him is still a possibility. Los Angeles Clipper head coach Doc Rivers told Zach Lowe of ESPN that he would break his ‘Big Three’ if they had another disappointing season.
The acquisition of power forwards Marreese Speights and Brandon Bass, and signing two big rookies, Bryce Johnson and Diamond Stone, may ease the release of Blake Griffin in exchange of Celtics’ starters and future first-round picks.
If the Celtics successfully accomplish their mission in California, there is a higher possibility that they will be a title contender team next season.
