Has DeMar DeRozan changed his mind? Earlier he expressed his desire to spend his whole career with the Toronto Raptors. But now the Raptors’ guard reportedly wants to sign for the Los Angeles Lakers as a free agent, as revealed by sources.
“First Take” analyst Stephen A Smith of ESPN pointed out the very recent feelings of DeMar DeRozan.
“He’s made it very, very clear that he wants to be in L.A.,” Smith said of DeRozan’s intentions in free agency. “He has family out there. He’s from out there. He wants to be in L.A. He wants to wear the purple and gold, and if there’s a way for it to happen, again he’s restricted, if there’s a way for it to happen, DeMar DeRozan will be in a Los Angeles Lakers uniform next season.”
The Lakers were ready to offer him a max contract. But has his postseason struggles dissuade the Lakers? It hasn’t. Unless the Lakers could lure bigger names like Kevin Durant or LeBron James, they would pursue DeRozan in free agency. DeRozan’s stellar show in the regular season is enough to earn him a lucrative deal as an unrestricted free agent. And Jim Buss needs to boost his roster quickly.
The Lakers are entering a new era after Kobe Bryant’s retirement. And they desperately require a star point guard like the Raptors’ player. The team lacks a superstar to lead them, and DeRozan is capable of evolving to a franchise cornerstone type player.
