With the goal of winning a back-to-back NBA championship title, the Cleveland Cavaliers see an urgency to bolster their roster for the 2016-17 NBA season. According to the latest NBA rumors, the Cavaliers will be trading for either Nerlens Noel or DeMarcus Cousins to upgrade their frontcourt.
The Cleveland Cavaliers succeeded to win their first NBA championship title after defeating the Golden State Warriors in the recent NBA Finals. To get their early revenge, the Warriors added another superstar to their roster, Kevin Durant.
Now that the Warriors have two-MVP caliber players on their team, they are now the favorite to win the 2017 NBA championship title. However, the Cleveland Cavaliers are expected to make a counter move to defend their throne.
Most of the rumors that circulate the Cleveland Cavaliers involve the 27-year-old power forward, Kevin Love. The past two seasons proved that Love was not the right fit to the Cavaliers. His inconsistency on the offensive end and lack of defense led the Cavs to lose some crucial games.
Of all the rumors this offseason, the trade for DeMarcus Cousins sounds interesting for the Cavaliers. Despite the statement of the Kings that they are not willing to trade ‘Boogie’, their moves in the 2016 NBA draft showed the opposite.
The Kings selected two centers in this year’s draft – Skal Labissiere and Georgios Papagiannis. Last year, the Kings also picked center Willie Cauley-Stein. With their plan to rebuild, the Kings must be prepared to lose DeMarcus Cousins in the 2018 NBA free agency.
However, the process may speed up if a trade involving ‘Boogie’ will happen now. According to Quenton Albertie of King James Gospel, the Cavaliers could offer Kevin Love for DeMarcus Cousins.
Cousins can provide the Cavaliers with an elite low-post scorer who can also protect the rim. On the other hand, Love provides the Sacramento Kings with a versatile offensive superstar who can provide the type of rebounding and outlet passes that let their young guards thrive in transition.
If this trade fails, the Cavaliers could still look for another option. Fortunately, another quality center is reportedly available on the trading block- Nerlens Noel. Noel is definitely not an offensive scorer like Kevin Love.
However, he has proven to be a quality rim protector and a defensive expert. The recent NBA finals showed that the Cavaliers need to improve their defense. The problem is the Cavaliers could not directly trade Kevin Love for Nerlens Noel.
In this trade, they need to find a third team to make the deal successful. The Sixers wanted to solve the logjam in their frontcourt while improving their backcourt.
The trade deal involving the Cavaliers may or may not happen before the start of the season. Still, they are expected to upgrade their roster to strengthen their chance in defending their throne.
