Rumors and speculations are now swirling around the Miami Heat center Hassan Whiteside who is expected to demand a maximum contract when he becomes a free agent on July 1.

Hassan Whiteside became part of various rumors regarding on which team he will play next season. The Miami Heat are threatened to lose their starting center due to a limited salary cap. The Los Angeles Lakers and the Boston Celtics are reportedly eyeing to acquire the Heat center and are very willing to offer him a maximum contract.

Many are expecting that the Miami Heat will be prioritizing Dwyane Wade in free agency. However, the decision may cost them of losing Whiteside if he will demand a maximum contract. Whiteside is expected to gain lots of suitors once he enters the free agency market.

The Los Angeles Lakers are desperately in need of a starting center since Roy Hibbert will become an unrestricted free agent on July 1. According to Steve Kyler of Basketball Insiders, Whiteside seems to be one of the top names on the Lakers’ wish list:

“There is a sense that Whiteside is one of the top names on the Lakers’ wish list of free agents, with the Celtics also interested. The problem with trying to peg either as having some edge over the other neglects that Whiteside could be the most obtainable free agent in the class and likely gets a lot of interest beyond those two suitors.” Kyler said.

Hassan Whiteside is undeniably one of the best centers in the league now. He is currently averaging 11.7 points, 9.9 rebounds, and 2.9 blocks. His dominance under the basket especially in protecting the rim can be considered one of the major reasons why he attracts lots of NBA teams.

If the Lakers succeed in getting Whiteside, he will be joining their young cores, D’Angelo Russell, Jordan Clarkson and Julius Randle, to continue the team’s legacy in the post-Kobe Bryant era. The Lakers will be having enough salary cap to sign two maximum-salaried player which means that giving him a maximum contract will not be a problem.

However, there is still a possibility that the Miami Heat will do everything they could to re-sign Hassan Whiteside for their team.
