The Dallas Mavericks are considering Hassan Whiteside and Mike Conley as their top targets in the upcoming free agency. The Mavs reportedly have a meeting with the Miami Heat center once free agency starts on July 1.
Whiteside had a stellar season with the Miami Heat in the 2015-16 season and is one of the top free agents this offseason. The seven-footer is eyeing a max deal in this free agency and many teams including the Los Angeles Lakers are pursuing him.
He was a key player for Miami in the 2016 NBA Playoffs and averaged 14.2 points, 11.8 rebounds and nearly four blocks per game this season.
ESPN identified Portland as another team expected to seriously pursue Whiteside.
Miami Heat is also eager to retain their top performer of this season. Whiteside is an intriguing case in this free agency. Since Miami doesn’t own his full bird rights, it cannot surpass the salary cap to keep him.
Heat president Pat Riley pointed out that the star center is their top priority, as reported by the Miami Herald.
“More than likely, players out there in free agency, our No. 1 priority is Hassan Whiteside,” Riley said after the season. “He’s 26 years old. He’s a game changer.”
Miami could only offer him a four-year deal like the other teams.
