Kevin Durant has finally made his decision and decided to join the Golden State Warriors. The 27-year-old small forward signed a two-year deal worth $54.3 million with a player option in the second year.
The Golden State Warriors are now the favorite team to win the NBA Finals 2017. However, many are disappointed with the decision of Kevin Durant, saying that it is not what an NBA superstar is supposed to do.
“The primary mandate I had for myself in making this decision was to have it based on the potential for my growth as a player,” the forward wrote on the Players Tribune website.
He added, “But I am also at a point in my life where it is of equal importance to find an opportunity that encourages my evolution as a man: moving out of my comfort zone to a new city and community which offers the greatest potential for my contribution and personal growth. With this in mind, I have decided that I am going to join the Golden State Warriors.”
Recalling before the free agency started, Kevin Durant said that his choice will be a ‘basketball decision’. Many interpreted this statement as Durant’s way saying that he want to win an NBA championship title next season. The six NBA teams, who managed to hold a meeting with the 2016 top free agent, were given the chance to show Durant why he should join their team.
Before the announcement, the candidates were down to three teams, including the Boston Celtics, Oklahoma City Thunder and the Golden State Warriors. The Oklahoma City Thunder expected that Kevin Durant will have lots of suitors in free agency so they decided to make an early move.
In the NBA draft night, the Thunder traded Serge Ibaka for Orlando Magic’s Victor Oladipo, Ersan Ilyasova, and Domantas Sabonis. Many have praised this move by the Thunder, including Kevin Durant. The Thunder felt that they made the right move and believed that it will make Durant re-sign with their team. Unfortunately, he left.
The Boston Celtics were also seriously pursuing Kevin Durant. They successfully acquired Al Horford in free agency with the belief that it will lure Kevin Durant to their team. Also, they made an impressive presentation for the 27-year-old small forward with the inclusion of his favorite quarterback, Tom Brady. Unfortunately, their effort was not enough.
Meanwhile, the Golden State Warriors also made an impressive presentation for the 2016 top free agent. Their current status in the league made them the top contender to sign Kevin Durant. Signing with a 73-9 win team with multiple superstars is a no-brainer for a player who wants to win an NBA championship title.
Kevin Durant may win an NBA championship title next season, even an MVP award. But, some people may think that he is escaping the right path to becoming one of the greatest players in the league. Kevin Durant made a practical choice, but he obviously didn’t think like an NBA superstar.
