Kevin Durant and the Oklahoma City Thunder had a commanding 3-1 series lead over the Golden State Warriors in the Western Conference Finals. However, Stephen Curry and company won Game 5 on Thursday to go within a game of tying the series. If OKC loses again in the next game, Game 6 in Oklahoma City, the Thunder will be in trouble in the do-or-die Game 7 and this will again open NBA rumors that Durant will leave the Thunder in the 2016 free agency.
The Warriors beat the Thunder in Game 5, 120-111 led by NBA MVP Curry, who had 31 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists and 5 steals. Klay Thompson added 27 points while Australian center Andrew Bogut had 15 points, 14 rebounds and 2 blocks for Golden State, which needs another win on Saturday to survive this best-of-seven series.
Kevin Durant top scored with 40 points but missed 19 of 31 field goals with 3 turnovers. Meanwhile, his superstar teammate Russell Westbrook also struggled going 11 of 28 with 7 turnovers. The pair has to play better at home in their next game to avoid going back to Golden State for Game 7.
If Durant struggles again in Game 6, the Warriors could steal another game and force the do-or-die game. The pressure will be on the Thunder in the final game of the series at the Warriors’ homecourt.
NBA rumors has continued to bother Durant recently despite the Thunder’s success. The OKC superstar will explore free agency for the first time in his career and he is expected to demand a max contract. Teams that have been linked to Durant in the past seasons are the Houston Rockets, Warriors, San Antonio Spurs, Los Angeles Lakers, Miami Heat and Washington Wizards, among others.
