The Golden State Warriors won the offseason by luring Kevin Durant from the Oklahoma City Thunder and join forces with Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green. According to the latest NBA rumors, Thompson could end up being demoted to the Sixth Man role next season.
The addition of Durant catapulted the Warriors into the favorites to win the NBA championship next season. However, many people believe that there won’t be enough touches for Curry, Thompson, Green and KD which could create chemistry problems.
In an interview with ESPN, Thompson expressed his willingness to sacrifice his numbers if it means that they are going to win multiple championships. He noted that he does not care about the stats and he only wants to count the number of rings he will have.
“I know how good I am in this league. I’m not going to judge my performance off numbers or anything. If we get wins, it really doesn’t matter, man. It’s all good,” Thompson said.
The 26-year-old also mentioned that he wants to emulate what Manu Ginobili did for the San Antonio Spurs throughout his entire career. He knows that Ginobili could have averaged more points if he played for another team but he made the sacrifice to come off the bench and become a four-time NBA champion.
“I don’t care about averaging 25 or even 20. I just want to finish it out and get back to the Finals and enjoy that ride,” he added.
According to Kevin Jones of KNBR.com, the Warriors should consider bringing Klay Thompson off the bench next season. Their second unit will not be as explosive as last year’s team but if Thompson could make the ultimate sacrifice, he can tear apart opposing teams’ bench.
Golden State have enough firepower with Durant and Curry starting while Thompson and Andre Iguodala team up to bolster the bench. It is a big risk for the Warriors but a player like Thompson is willing to sacrifice stats over winning.
