The Los Angeles Lakers struck out on several big name free agents this offseason such as Kevin Durant, DeMar DeRozan and Hassan Whiteside. However, the latest NBA rumors suggest that the Lakers will try their luck on the trade market at the deadline by going after DeMarcus Cousins and Jimmy Butler.
According to Gil Alcaraz IV of Hoops Habit, Cousins and Butler will be the two big names that the Lakers will possibly target at the deadline. He also named Nerlens Noel, Jahlil Okafor and Kenneth Faried but they are not game changers like the two All-Stars mentioned above.
The Lakers are stacked with young players such as D’Angelo Russell, Jordan Clarkson, Julius Randle and Brandon Ingram. However, the trade for DeMarcus Cousins and Jimmy Butler will depend on their respective teams’ performance in the upcoming season.
The Sacramento Kings have a new coach and it might be the final season that both the team and Cousins try to make it work. On the other hand, the Chicago Bulls are experimenting with Butler, Dwyane Wade and Rajon Rondo.
There is a big chance that both teams will falter and they will look to unload big names to get young assets to build their future. The Kings have pursued D’Angelo Russell before and they might be willing to trade Cousins for him.
As for the Bulls, they might also want Russell but Jordan Clarkson is also a possible target. Nevertheless, these are just purely speculative at this point since no one knows what will be the fate of all three teams next season.
The Lakers are in a very rough position for the next couple of years but if they just stay patient, they might become a contender in no time. Russell and Brandon Ingram have superstar potentials and they could always sign DeMarcus Cousins via free agency in the summer of 2018.
