The New York Knicks are in a good position to make the playoffs next season with the acquisition of Derrick Rose from the Chicago Bulls. However, the latest NBA rumors suggest that the trade was made for a much bigger plan involving LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Paul joining Carmelo Anthony in New York next summer.
The Knicks traded for Rose, Justin Holiday and a future second round pick on Wednesday in exchange for Robin Lopez, Jerian Grant and Jose Calderon. Knicks fans have different opinions about the trade. Some praised the acquisition of Rose while others did not like it.
Nick Wright of FOX Sports explained in his appearance on The Herd why the Rose trade is the precursor of “The Brotherhood” joining forces in New York. Wright first noted the fact that LeBron James revealed in an interview earlier this year that he wants to play with Anthony, Wade and Paul before he retires.
He then mentioned that James, Wade and Paul will be free agents after the 2016-17 season. James and Wade will likely re-sign a two-year deal with a player option after Year 2 this offseason. Meanwhile, Paul also has a player option after next season.
Wright added that the New York Knicks will have a ton of money in the summer of 2017 because they will only have Anthony, Kristaps Porzingis and Kyle O’Quinn on the roster. Lastly, he pointed out that Wade is already 34 years old, and next season will be the perfect time to play together.
Of course this is just Wright’s theory but it’s not impossible. However, it should be noted that James is very happy in Cleveland after winning the 2016 NBA championship. The Knicks will also sign other players this summer who could be on the books for several seasons.
Nonetheless, LeBron James has expressed his interest in teaming up with Wade, CP3 and Melo before he retires. After bringing a championship in Cleveland, the city and the fans won’t have a problem if he chooses to leave them again.
“I really hope that before our career is over, we can all play together. At least one, maybe one or two seasons—me, Melo, D-Wade, CP — we can get a year in. I would actually take a pay cut to do that,” James told Bleacher Report in March.
