Mike Conley is the top free agent in the market and according to NBA rumors, various teams are lining up and preparing to steal him when free agency officially opens July 1. Conley’s team, the Memphis Grizzlies are worried that their star point guard might be nabbed by another NBA squad.
“Here’s a bit of potentially good news for those Knicks fans interested in free agent Mike Conley: some members of the Grizzlies front office are growing a bit concerned about the possibility of Conley leaving in free agency, per a source with knowledge of the situation,” Ian Begley of ESPN reports.
According to Begley, the Grizzlies are going all-in in their effort to retain Conley, who has been the team’s point guard since being drafted by Memphis as the fourth overall pick in the 2007 NBA Draft.
The report adds that Memphis plans to use a video of pop star Justin Timberlake, who is a Grizzlies part-owner, of their recruiting pitch. The Grizzlies are expected to be the front-runners for Conley because they can offer a more lucrative contract for the point guard while also offering to remain one of the core players of the team along with star center Marc Gasol.
However, that’s not stopping teams from chasing Conley, especially the New York Knicks who are involved in a lot of NBA rumors of acquiring a top free agent PG this summer. The Knicks are also reportedly targeting other PGs like Rajon Rondo, Jordan Clarkson and Jeremy Lin.
The 28-year-old Conley is known as one of the better point guards in the league both for his ability to run the team and on defense. He was a member of the NBA All-Defensive Second Team in 2013.
NBA rumors have linked Mike Conley, who has averaged 15.3 points, 6.1 assists and 1.2 steals per game last year, this 2016 offseason to various teams including the Knicks and San Antonio Spurs.
