The Brooklyn Nets are now scrambling to find pieces that would fill their roster and rumors are swirling that the Nets are eyeing Lance Stephenson and Dion Waiters after the Miami Heat and Portland Trail Blazers matched their offers for Tyler Johnson and Allen Crabbe.
However, Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical noted that the Nets are contemplating on whether they would make a move with Waiters since he is a restricted free agent (RFA).
As an RFA, it means that the Nets can give Waiters an offer sheet, but the Oklahoma City Thunder might be able to match and the Nets would lose another potential talent that could boost their young roster.
“For the Nets, one possibility on the market could be a run at Oklahoma City Thunder restricted free-agent guard Dion Waiters, league sources said. The Nets have given some consideration to an offer, but will likely evaluate that in the next few days, league sources said,” Wojnarowski said.
Looks like the Nets are avoiding another heartache if the Thunder would be able to match their offer. But one more option that the Nets are looking at is Lance Stephenson. The 25-year-old shooting guard has been declined by the Memphis Grizzlies of his $9.41 million option for the 2016-2017 season thus, making him an unrestricted free agent.
The Nets might see signing Stephenson as a headache because of his attitude. But if given the chance to showcase his talent on the floor Stephenson may be able to give their money’s worth. There is also the question of consistency in his game as he averaged 8.3 points, 1.9 assists and 3.2 rebounds per game last season.
Based on the last five games that Stephenson has played with the Grizzlies, he has contributed an average of 14.8 points, 2.2 assists and 1.6 rebounds per game. This numbers could very well help the Nets as they are also rebuilding their roster for next season.
Things might seem a blur for the Nets as of the moment but to gamble with both Waiters and Stephenson might make the difference. Nets general manager Sean Marks is doing the best he can to bring in the needed pieces to make the Nets a team to look at in the coming season.
