Since shooting guard Nick Young joined the Lakers in 2013 via a four-year $21.5 million contract, the most attention he drew for his off-court drama involving D’Angelo Russell.
Up to this day, he still hasn’t been able to justify his worth by playing valuable time for the team, and his immaturity in handling issues with Russel concerning his ex-gf Iggy Azalea has only made things worse for the struggling Lakers.
Nick Young averaged 7.3 points and 0.6 assists per game last season, shooting 33.9% from the field. His past differences with former head coach Byron Scott didn’t bode well for him either.
If there’s any sign of Young’s maturity developing it is with his willingness to patch things up with D’Angelo Russel. The two couldn’t see eye to eye after Russel’s phone was reportedly accidentally hacked, which spread a recording of Nick Young apparently admitting to cheating with his then girlfriend Iggy Azalea.
They broke up following the revelation, and it seemed impossible for Nick Young and D’Angelo Russel to be good friends again.
“We’re teammates. We’ll be able to work it out. We’ve already been working it out. It is what it is. I can’t be mad forever,” Young said, according to a report by Fox Sports.
While it looks like they are both willing to quit the drama and move on, to focus on rebuilding the Lakers, rumors are circulating that such effort may be too late as the team may move him to the Sixers for Nerlens Noel.
The Philadelphia 76ers has a surplus of big men, and needs to trade one of them for a shooting guard to build around Ben Simmons. Now that Young wants to focus on his game moving forward, he may do just that in a new team.
Ben Simmons’ basketball IQ and passing ability could help him find his spots, and develop from there.
Meanwhile, the Lakers would greatly benefit with Nerlens Noel helping them on the defensive end, especially with Timothey Mozgov’s recent injury.
Nick Young has reportedly had a seemingly positive conversation with new Laker coach Luke Walton saying, “It’s a breath of fresh air for me. “Luke is a big-time coach and came from a championship team. I think I have the tools that we can use as a shooter.” According to Los Angeles Daily News.
Still, the addition of Brandon Ingram to the team has amped up rumors of the Nick Young trade before the season starts.
