As Jahlil Okafor is being considered to be traded this summer by the Philadelphia 76ers to a player that would benefit them in the process, rumors are swirling that the team is now shopping for a team which would agree to terms with them.
The 20-year old center is coming off a surgery to repair a tear in his right knee, the injury caused him to miss the team’s final 23 games of the season. Okafor still has a live contract with the 76ers in his two-year deal with the team valued at $5 million for next season with a team’s option going into the 2017 and 2018 seasons with a qualifying offer pegged at $ 8,283,747.
It has been reported that with the No. 1 overall pick for this year’s draft taking either Ben Simmons or Brandon Ingram would only load the 76ers front court and it would be wiser if they would unload some of their big men in return for quality point guard in the free agency market or get into a trade with a team, which would offer them something that they could not refuse.
Okafor has stated that he is anxious to get back into action after he is given clearance by his doctors. He is taking his rehabilitation sessions at Duke University and Okafor is already eager to take part in this summer’s training.
“I’m getting anxious,” Okafor said on the podcast hosted by Jon Scheyer, a Duke assistant coach. “I got in trouble a week and a half ago for going out there and shooting. The biggest problem is my knee feels really good. So I want to go out there and shoot.”
When the 76ers sent out feelers to other teams it is still uncertain which team would give the better offer as teams are still trying to figure who among the rookie candidates and free agents they would tap to be included in their trading chip to land Okafor before the start of training camp.
Rumors are stating that teams such as the Lakers, Celtics, and Suns are preparing to make an offer to the 76ers to acquire the services of Okafor. Though nothing official has yet to be announced, one thing is for sure Okafor is certainly going to play for another team next season.
