NBA Rumors: Russell Westbrook to Boston? Celtics could use Brooklyn’s picks as ‘trump cards’ to acquire Thunder superstar

The Boston Celtics are near to complete their roster for the 2016-17 NBA season. However, rumors continue to swirl about the possibility of a blockbuster deal this offseason. Will the Celtics push the trade for Russell Westbrook?

The Boston Celtics are one of the NBA teams who dreamt of building a title contender team next season. In the recent free agency, the Celtics succeeded to sign center Al Horford but failed to acquire their main target, Kevin Durant.

However, Celtics general manager Danny Ainge said that they are not done yet in upgrading their roster.

“We’re not done,” Ainge explained in Salt Lake City. “We have the same plans. If you don’t get what you want you have to keep fighting and make the best of it. Everybody wants Kevin Durant on your team and not everyone gets him.”

Last month, Danny Ainge and the Celtics brass were reportedly having an ‘unusual’ vacation in California where most players were in, including Russell Westbrook. When Kevin Durant decided to leave the Oklahoma City Thunder, the 27-year-old point guard became the center of trade rumors.

There were reports saying that Russell Westbrook has no intention to extend or renegotiate his contract with the Thunder. Trading him would be the best option than letting him go in next year’s free agency. Westbrook is currently one of the best players in the league, so the Thunder are expecting to get a big return.

With the departure of Kevin Durant and the threat of a Russell Westbrook trade, the Thunder are expected to start rebuilding the team. This process will be more effective if they get future draft picks in which the Boston Celtics are rich.

The Celtics currently own the Brooklyn’s picks in the next two years. The Nets’ roster are not that competitive so the chance of getting a top pick in the 2017 NBA draft is high. However, knowing Danny Ainge, he will not proceed with such deal without getting a commitment from Russell Westbrook.

“For the Celtics to give up the kind of assets it would take to get one of the most talented players in the league, they would have to be convinced he would stay beyond the 2016-17 season — the last on his contract.” Boston Herald’s Steve Bulpett wrote.

If the Thunder superstar agrees to extend his contract with the Celtics, there is a possibility that they will use Brooklyn’s picks as their trump cards to acquire him. For the Celtics, a deal that would give them another superstar is a must since they are eyeing to be a title contender team next season.

The Boston Celtics are known for making blockbuster deals. Though the trade deal is yet to happen, it will not be a surprise if Danny Ainge makes such a move.

Celtics can’t trade the 2017 nets pick because it’s not their pick, you can’t trade a right to swap picks. they could only draft a player then trade that players rights, but they could not use that 2017 pick in a trade right now.

Sean, yes they can trade the right to swap picks. They would have to trade there pick as well, so that when whatever trade partner they gave it to decides to use it, they would have to give the Nets the Celtics pick. However, this trade is NEVER going to happen. Every dumb sports writer has put the Celtics in every big trade talk over the past two seasons. Unfortunately, this isn’t going to stop until 2019. They look at the big name free agents on the market and just assume Ainge wants to trade the Nets pick for them. It’s not going to happen. When the big name free agents are PF/C’s it makes a little sense. But when the free agent they’re talking about arePG’s, it makes no sense at all. I doubt Ainge has even considered this. Why would he trade the future of his franchise for a player that can’t play with his other beter player,IT? Also, that would be saying they don’t believe Smart could ever run the show. What about AB or Rozier? The fools who keep writing these articles are the same people that thought the Celtics where going to take Dunn. I mean seriously, if your job is to write about sports, at least have a clue about the teams your writing about.
