The Boston Celtics are near to complete their roster for the 2016-17 NBA season. However, rumors continue to swirl about the possibility of a blockbuster deal this offseason. Will the Celtics push the trade for Russell Westbrook?
The Boston Celtics are one of the NBA teams who dreamt of building a title contender team next season. In the recent free agency, the Celtics succeeded to sign center Al Horford but failed to acquire their main target, Kevin Durant.
However, Celtics general manager Danny Ainge said that they are not done yet in upgrading their roster.
“We’re not done,” Ainge explained in Salt Lake City. “We have the same plans. If you don’t get what you want you have to keep fighting and make the best of it. Everybody wants Kevin Durant on your team and not everyone gets him.”
Last month, Danny Ainge and the Celtics brass were reportedly having an ‘unusual’ vacation in California where most players were in, including Russell Westbrook. When Kevin Durant decided to leave the Oklahoma City Thunder, the 27-year-old point guard became the center of trade rumors.
Told emphatically by league source there's no chance Russell Westbrook will do a renegotiation/extension of his contract (one yr remaining).

There were reports saying that Russell Westbrook has no intention to extend or renegotiate his contract with the Thunder. Trading him would be the best option than letting him go in next year’s free agency. Westbrook is currently one of the best players in the league, so the Thunder are expecting to get a big return.
With the departure of Kevin Durant and the threat of a Russell Westbrook trade, the Thunder are expected to start rebuilding the team. This process will be more effective if they get future draft picks in which the Boston Celtics are rich.
The Celtics currently own the Brooklyn’s picks in the next two years. The Nets’ roster are not that competitive so the chance of getting a top pick in the 2017 NBA draft is high. However, knowing Danny Ainge, he will not proceed with such deal without getting a commitment from Russell Westbrook.
“For the Celtics to give up the kind of assets it would take to get one of the most talented players in the league, they would have to be convinced he would stay beyond the 2016-17 season — the last on his contract.” Boston Herald’s Steve Bulpett wrote.
If the Thunder superstar agrees to extend his contract with the Celtics, there is a possibility that they will use Brooklyn’s picks as their trump cards to acquire him. For the Celtics, a deal that would give them another superstar is a must since they are eyeing to be a title contender team next season.
The Boston Celtics are known for making blockbuster deals. Though the trade deal is yet to happen, it will not be a surprise if Danny Ainge makes such a move.
