There are many NBA rumors surrounding Russell Westbrook, referring to him getting traded to another team. However, the Oklahoma City (OKC) Thunder are currently not looking for suitors to move the player. This NBA rumor pertains to Westbrook assuming the leadership role for the team next season.
According to OKC coach Billy Donovan, Russell’s role will change, and that the player might assume the leadership role in the team.
“He’s obviously proven he can score, but I think Russell’s also smart enough to understand right now that he’s got to take the group with him,” Donovan told Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical.
The OKC coach argued that the team would not be successful if Westbrook is the only one carrying them.
“I think from a style of play standpoint, we’ve got to maximize the people around [Westbrook] inside of a system where they can be effective and productive and they can help,” Donovan stated.
The Thunder coach is right in the sense that a team is not called a team if only one player is expected to deliver.
Westbrook is an offensive machine, who can get buckets from anywhere on the court. But the next season would need Russell to be a leader for the young Thunder team that lose two of their key players this offseason.
Those players are Kevin Durant and Serge Ibaka, who are vital pieces for the OKC team that reached the NBA finals four years ago.
The Thunder are really doing their best to make Westbrook motivated, and not be affected by the NBA rumors that surround him.
