The Philadelphia 76ers are reportedly nearing a trade of either Nerlens Noel or Jahlil Okafor, according to the latest NBA rumors. The East team signed veteran Elton Brand to a short-term deal but it still puts them with many big men available next season that a trade is likely before the regular season starts later this year.
Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports claims that the Sixers “have had periodic trade talks this summer involving Noel and Okafor”. The writer added that there is a plan to “move one of them” eventually and that could happen this 2016 offseason.
One of the reasons stated for either a Noel or Okafor trade is the fit within the team. Philadelphia features lots of capable big men in the comebacking Joel Embiid, rookies Dario Saric and Ben Simmons.
The Sixers management also admitted early in the offseason that they want to start the season with a more balanced roster. Trading Noel or Okafor for a point guard or wingman will help them achieve that.
There are many teams that can possibly acquire Noel and Okafor and the Sixers have different directions on how they can do about trading one of their prized big men.
Two teams mentioned the last few weeks are the Boston Celtics and Minnesota Timberwolves.
The Celtics have lots of pieces to offer including Jaylen Brown and a future lottery pick. Getting Okafor makes sense pairing him with a nice frontcourt duo with free agent signing Al Horford.
The Timberwolves have also lots of point guards, and Ricky Rubio is reportedly available. A Rubio for Noel trade works for both the teams, the Sixers get their starting PG and the T’Wolves gets a young forward to pair with Karl-Anthony Towns.
Are the Philadelphia 76ers finally making a deal involving Nerlens Noel and Jahlil Okafor? Watch out for more NBA rumors the next few weeks with some teams serious in improving before the season begins in October.
