NBA Rumors: Spurs signing Hassan Whiteside in free agency?

The San Antonio Spurs are heading into the offseason waiting for Tim Duncan’s decision about his future. The latest NBA rumors suggest that even if Duncan returns next season, the Spurs will need to consider signing center Hassan Whiteside in free agency.

According to Jeff McDonald of San Antonio Express-News, many factors are involved in Duncan’s retirement decision. First is his family and desire to be with his daughter and son, second is his health and desire, and lastly is if he thinks he’ll be able to help the Spurs next season.

San Antonio will need to find a new big man in the middle that will be their defensive anchor in the middle for years to come. LaMarcus Aldridge is not a great defensive player and he’s more known for his scoring ability.

Ian Smith of Air Alamo suggested that the Spurs should consider signing Hassan Whiteside in free agency this summer. He opined that San Antonio’s front office, coaching staff and locker room are enough to keep Whiteside’s head in the right place.

The Spurs also have the money spend on at least one free agent and their chances to sign Kevin Durant were not very high to begin with. Whiteside finished third in the Defensive Player of the Year voting behind Kawhi Leonard and Draymond Green.

If ever R.C. Buford and the rest of the Spurs front office decide to add the soon-to-be 27-year-old center, they will have one of the scariest defenses in the league. Leonard and Danny Green will defend the perimeter while Whiteside swats anything that comes close to the paint.

However, these are all just speculations and suggestions. The Miami Heat is determined to retain Whiteside but they want him to sign less than a max deal. He’s also been linked with teams such as the Los Angeles Lakers.
