The San Antonio Spurs lost in the Kevin Durant sweepstakes but have another target in free agency in Pau Gasol. According to NBA rumors, the Texas team will most likely deal Boris Diaw to create cap space needed to sign the Spanish big man.
Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports first reported the possibility that Diaw could be on his way out of the Spurs, the Frenchman’s team the last four seasons.
Diaw was one of the primary big men off the bench for the Spurs with averages of 6.4 points, 3.1 rebounds and 2.3 assists in 18.2 minutes per game in the 2015-2016 regular season.
There are NBA rumors that Tim Duncan will be retiring from the NBA and the likely starting frontcourt will be star forwards LaMarcus Aldridge, Kawhi Leonard and the veteran Gasol.
Diaw is a 13-year NBA veteran who played for the Atlanta Hawks, Phoenix Suns and Charlotte Hornets. Even at 34 years old, he is seen as a player who can still contribute with his shooting and passing skills.
Diaw is also representing the France basketball national team at the FIBA 2016 Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Manila, Philippines set from July 5 to 10.
Other NBA rumors has Diaw linked to “about 5 teams” according to a tweet from Jabari Young of The San Antonio Express-News.
Update: The Spurs sent Boris Diaw to the Utah Jazz in a trade Tuesday.
