Ricky Rubio is the top name reportedly available for the Minnesota Timberwolves because of the arrival of new prized rookie guard Kris Dunn. Speculations have included the name of the Spanish point guard in trade rumors, like the deal to a team like the Philadelphia 76ers, which badly needs help in their backcourt.
However, another Eastern team is likely to show interest in Rubio. Mentioned in rumors are the Orlando Magic, which has some pieces like Aaron Gordon to offer to Minnesota if they want a trade with the Timberwolves.
New Timberwolves head coach Tom Thibodeau is likely to see how a Rubio and Dunn rotation works first and likely to play them together in the backcourt as well. Minnesota is a young team but wants to make the playoffs, if they struggle early in the 2016-2017 regular season, a trade of Ricky Rubio will be seriously considered.
The Magic are in a similar situation in the Eastern Conference. Orlando wants to battle for the playoffs but if they struggle early in the season, they will have to address their frontcourt rotation, which features lots of big men like Serge Ibaka, Nikola Vucevic, Bismack Biyombo, Jeff Green and Aaron Gordon.
Via ESPN’s Trade Checker, a Magic-Timberwolves trade works under NBA trade rules. The deal sends Ricky Rubio and Shabazz Muhammad to Orlando and Jodie Meeks, C.J. Watson and Aaron Gordon to Minnesota.
This is a fair deal for both sides. The Timberwolves open up playing time for their new guards and starts Gordon in the frontcourt alongside Karl-Anthony Towns and Andrew Wiggins.
The Magic will upgrade their starting point guard spot and move Elfrid Payton to the bench and add depth to their guard spot. The deal also clears the logjom at the forward spots and Orlando can start developing Mario Hezonja to a major role.
Should the Timberwolves, Magic consider this trade? NBA rumors will surround both if they struggle early in the season and this is one of the deals could happen before the trade deadline.
