The Boston Celtics and Philadelphia 76ers really want to work on a deal that would send Nerlens Noel to the Celtics but for that to happen rumors are swirling that both squads are getting the Minnesota Timberwolves in the mix. Thus, Noel will go to the Celtics with Amir Johnson to the Timberwolves while Ricky Rubio would go to the 76ers.
However, will it work? It is no secret that Noel wants out of Philadelphia and he has been giving hints to fans about where he wanted to be traded. For the Celtics, there has been a growing interest to get Noel via trade, but they are still looking at their list of assets who could figure in the trade and Amir Johnson could be a possible piece for the trade to happen.
Having Noel in the Celtic line-up would give them another go to the guy who could very well complement Al Horford and Isaiah Thomas. With Noel down low, Horford could easily play beyond the arc and the high-low plays and would space out the floor for Isaiah Thomas as well. Brad Stevens wants to develop a young unit this season and with the addition of Noel, he could also help the guide the other young players.
On the other hand, Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor has stated that they would not trade Ricky Rubio. But it seems that upgrading their roster could make Taylor change his mind. In getting Johnson, the Timberwolves gets a power forward which could also help inside the paint in defense. Not mentioning that Johnson could also contribute solid minutes coming off the bench.
Johnson averages 7.3 points with 6.4 rebounds and 1.1 blocks per game. He could very well develop his skills under coach Tom Thibodeau just like the development of Joakim Noah during their tenure with the Chicago Bulls.
Though one might sense that Johnson with the Timberwolves would be a mistake, but the Timberwolves could make out of something with Johnson, whose contract is set to expire next summer. He may very well complement them coming off the bench and a central piece that could give them a cap space for next season.
Sending Rubio to the 76ers would also ease out the teams unbalance squad and since they are loaded in the big man section. Having Rubio could very well spread out the floor in their offense. The 76ers wanted to have a floor general that could space out their offense and get their big men to move with their offensive flow.
Having Rubio would certainly boost that section as he is a good passer and gets his big men involve in the offense. It might be an insane trade scenario, but looking at a different angle it would make sense for all teams.
