The Washington Wizards beat the Sacramento Kings in overtime, 101-95 on Monday. But the big story was before the game when superstar DeMarcus Cousins mentioned the possibility that he will someday play with John Wall. This opens up the NBA trade rumors that a Kings-Wizards deal could happen before the deadline.
The Wizards point guard was a former teammate of the Kings center with the Kentucky Wildcats in college basketball. There have been many NBA trade rumors involving the Wizards mainly because of an alleged rift with backcourt partner Bradley Beal.
Before the Wizards-Kings match-up, Cousins admitted that the possibility of teaming up with Wall always comes up in conversations between the two.
Cousins had a big game against his former teammate with 36 points and 20 rebounds on Monday.
“Do we ever talk about playing with one another? Is that your question? It’s come up. They’re going to all come to Sac. Come to Sac. [John Wall] wants me [in Washington]. Eric [Bledsoe] wants us in Phoenix,” Cousins said.
“You never know. Maybe. There might be a time we team up in a rec league after we retire or something. You never know.”
Cousins was referring to another ex-Kentucky teammate Eric Bledsoe, who plays for the Phoenix Suns. Here’s the full Cousins’ comment on the possibility that he’ll play with his former college teammate:
“[To] Play with John and Eric again, you never know what will happen. It’s the NBA, so hopefully one day he’ll be in Sacramento uniform,” Cousins added.
However, it’s difficult to see Wall and Cousins together in the same NBA team. The salary cap and trade restrictions will be hard for any Kings-Wizards deal to happen. They can team up as free agents, but Cousins will be available only after the next season and Wall will hit free agency in 2019.
How Kings-Wizards blockbuster trade could happen
But there is a small possibility of a blockbuster Sacramento-Washington blockbuster. That is assuming that one of these teams are looking for a total rebuild and unload the contracts of their franchise players.
The Kings does not have much to offer the Wizards if they want Wall. Washington can demand multiple future first round picks and salary cap fillers to match Wall’s contract.
The bigger possibility is that Cousins to be traded to Washington. With Beal’s contract, the Wizards can potentially trade for the Kings big man but the Wizards will have to send out multiple first round picks to Sacramento.
DeMarcus Cousins’ comments should stir up the NBA trade rumors that will bring John Wall to Sacramento before the trade deadline in February.
