The Cleveland Cavaliers will be entering the 2016-17 season as the reigning NBA champions. With the goal of winning the title again, the Cavalier are reportedly interested in acquiring DeMarcus Cousins from the Sacramento Kings on or before the trade deadline.
The Cleveland Cavaliers succeeded to win their first NBA championship title after defeating the Golden State Warriors in the recent finals. The Warriors are aiming to get an early revenge with the latest addition of Kevin Durant on their roster.
Since Durant joined the Warriors, the Cavaliers have not made any major improvements on their roster. There were reports saying that they wanted to keep the same lineup next season but some people still believe that the Cavaliers are creating a huge plan.
In July, Steve Kyler of Basketball Insider revealed that the Cleveland Cavaliers inquired to the Sacramento Kings regarding the availability of DeMarcus Cousins via trade. ‘Boogie’ has been frequently mentioned in various trade rumors this offseason after he expressed his disappointment in the Kings’ offseason moves.
In the 2016 NBA draft, the Kings selected Georgios Papagiannis and Skal Labissiere who played the same position as DeMarcus Cousins. Until now, no one has the idea why the Kings chose two big men if they really want to rebuild around Cousins.
As of now, the Kings are not planning to entertain any offer for ‘Boogie’, unless Cousins himself demands the trade. With the current state of the Kings, there is no way that they will do better next season, especially Cousins who just lost his court partner Rajon Rondo.
The Cleveland Cavaliers are one of the best trade destinations for DeMarcus Cousins, especially with the emergence of the Warriors’ ‘Super Team’. Cousins will undeniably be the ‘kryptonite’ of the Warriors’ small-ball strategy.
In a suggested trade scenario, the Cavaliers could offer Kevin Love and Tristan Thompson for DeMarcus Cousins and Rudy Gay. This trade works on the ESPN trade machine. If this deal happens on or before the trade deadline, there is no doubt that the Cavaliers will be repeating as NBA champions.
The 2016 NBA Finals proved how LeBron James and the Cavs battled against the Warriors. Now that another superstar joined their rival, a defenseless starter like Kevin Love will be a burden if they want to repeat as a champion. With the near start of the 2016-17 NBA season, expect more trade rumors to swirl around the NBA teams.
