The New York Knicks made a major upgrade to their roster this summer with the hope of contending for the title in the 2016-17 NBA season. Some people believe that only injuries can prevent the Knicks from winning the 2017 NBA championship title.

New York Knicks Roster/Depth Chart

Point Guards: Derrick Rose, Brandon Jennings

Shooting Guards: Courtney Lee, Sasha Vujacic, Justin Holiday

Small Forwards: Carmelo Anthony, Lance Thomas, Mindaugas Kuzminskas, Maurice Daly Ndour

Power Forwards: Kristaps Porzingis, Kyle O’Quinn, Lou Amundson

Centers: Joakim Noah, Willy Hernangomez, Marshall Plumlee

Key Loss/es: Brook Lopez (Chicago Bulls), Arron Afflalo (Sacramento Kings), Jose Calderon (Los Angeles Lakers)

Key Addition/s: Derrick Rose (Chicago Bulls), Joakim Noah (Chicago Bulls), Courtney Lee (Charlotte Hornets), Brandon Jennings (Orlando Magic)

Strengths: The New York Knicks are expected to be a better offensive team next season, especially with the addition of Derrick Rose, Courtney Lee, and Brandon Jennings. The team has succeeded to address their two biggest issues last season – point guard play and lack of effort on the defensive end.

With new head coach Jeff Hornacek, Knicks will not be forced to execute the triangle offense, which is believed to be better for Carmelo Anthony and Kristaps Porzingis. Hornacek’s coaching style and attitude will be vital in allowing his players to learn, grow and make mistakes.

Weaknesses: Most of the key acquisitions of the Knicks this summer was injury prone. Derrick Rose, Joakim Noah, and Brandon Jennings have suffered multiple injuries that led them to miss some of the games. The Knicks will surely be in big trouble if one of their starters will not be playing, especially in crucial games.

The addition of Joakim Noah is expected to address the Knicks’ problem on the defensive end. However, the past seasons proved that Noah and Rose have already passed their prime. Starting a new journey in another team will help them prove their worth in the league once again.

Predictions: In the ESPN Summer Forecast, the New York Knicks are predicted to finish in the 9th spot in the Eastern Conference with a win-loss record of 40-42. It is quite better compared to their 32-50 standing last season. However, the predictions were based on the games that Rose and Noah missed in the past seasons.

If the Knicks’ key players stay healthy, there is a possibility that they could prove the predictions wrong. On paper, there is no doubt that the Knicks can be a playoff contender or even compete for the NBA championship title. In the nearing 2016-17 NBA season, the Knicks will be proving why they deserve to be called a ‘Super Team’.
