New York Jets linebacker Quinton Coples out with injured ankle
The New York Jets will be without one of their better players for a few weeks. Quinton Coples, one of the Jets’ starting outside linebackers, is out indefinitely after sustaining a hairline fracture in his right ankle.
According to ESPN, Coples injured his ankle in the second quarter of Saturday;s preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Coples went up to block a pass from Chad Henne and landed awkwardly. The Jets announced that Coples is scheduled to have a “medical procedure” on Tuesday, according to the New York Times, and will miss the remainder of the preseason and likely a few games into the regular season.
ESPN notes that the Jets expected the versatile Coples to have an increased role in the defense. Coples has been struggling to set the edge after being converted from a defensive end to an outside linebacker.
With Coples sidelined for the foreseeable future, Antwan Barnes will step into his spot at the outside linebacker position.
